‘I Was Arrested at a National Day Protest in Hong Kong’

Hong Kong law enforcement created at minimum 87 arrests on Oct. 1, as thousands of protesters took to the streets in defiance of a law enforcement ban on a protest march in assist of 12 activists detained by the China Coastline Guard as they tried out to flee to democratic Taiwan. Among the the arrestees was a male who was surrounded by riot law enforcement as he was using tobacco a cigarette on the road. In an incident filmed by the media, the man was afterwards shoved to the floor, his glasses traveling off his experience. The man, who gave only the nickname Kelvin, spoke to RFA’s Cantonese Company about his ordeals in police custody:

I told the riot law enforcement they should really either demand me or arrest me. 1 of them snatched away my phone. I told them if they wished to arrest me, they ought to arrest me, not rob me of my individual home. I said I would give them my possessions for safekeeping if they concluded a regular arrest method.

I was extremely upset that they just stole my particular residence devoid of going as a result of appropriate strategies.

I informed them: “I really don’t have a issue if you want to give me a ticket or arrest me, but I want you to do it legally.”

[The police proceeded to arrest Kelvin, who later asked for medical treatment for injuries sustained during the arrest.]

Right after I arrived at the hospital, I was told by a riot law enforcement officer I did not know and hadn’t witnessed just before that the officers experienced utilised excessive force, and that he did not see any cause to arrest me.

He informed me: “How about we just make a symbolic arrest. Your personal possessions or phone would not be confiscated and you would not be cuffed when you go onto the ward.”

When we obtained to the triage station at Ruttonjee Healthcare facility, the riot law enforcement could not undo the cable ties [used to secure my hands]. My hands were being bruised and bleeding.

Then they acquired incredibly nervous and started out inquiring around for scissors, inquiring a lady doing the job in the crisis place if they could borrow some. They managed to minimize it open up, but I was still left with cuts from the scissors on my correct and left arms.

They are supposed to be skillfully educated to use acceptable force and restraining procedures, but they couldn’t even get the cable tie open up. I assume it was unreasonable of them to injure an arrested man or woman making an attempt to get the cable tie open up.

This was thoroughly an arbitrary arrest. As associates of the public, we have no handle in excess of arbitrary arrests by law enforcement, who can arrest as a lot of folks as they like. But you will find no way to press charges towards them soon after you have been arrested, so what is the position [of complaining]?

I believe men and women who have acted against their conscience will be punished just one working day.

Right after the video clip was introduced, I was questioned if I was frightened of getting into additional difficulties with police.

I would like to say that from the to start with day I took to the streets, I was anticipating to be arrested. I am not worried.

[Police later released Kelvin and three others arrested at the same time on bail. They are required to report to local police stations this month.]
